I hope that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! In class, there are a lot of things to look forward to in December!
Math- This week, we worked on various multiplication story problems. Students learned how to solve shape and number pattern problems. They also learned about multiplicative (yes, they can pronounce this!) comparison problems. An example of a multiplicative comparison problem is: A tree in Mrs. Franz's yard is 35 feet tall. That is 7 times taller than Mrs. Franz. How tall is Mrs. Franz? Have your child try to solve this problem with you! Students completed a Check-In that was graded and sent home to be signed today. Please review this with your child and study multiplication facts!
Reading- We are currently working in our Nonfiction Unit. This week, we shifted gears into strategies for reading historical nonfiction texts. To practice these skills, the class is working on a research project about one of the subtopics related to the Causes of the American Revolution. This connects nicely to our upcoming social studies unit on the American Revolution!
Writing- We are working on our new unit: Personal Essay! Students are generating their own ideas for a Personal Essay and will select a topic to turn into an essay next week. Ask your child about some of their big ideas in Writing.
Science- This week, we finished learning about the structures and functions of animals by designing the best ear for hearing. We learned about how an animal's senses help it to survive and thrive in its environment. The class had a quiz on animals on Wednesday, which was graded and returned the next day. If you have not yet seen how your child performed on the quiz, please ask them for it! We also started the last part of the unit, which is related to the structures and functions of plants. This part is shorter than the animal part, so you can expect a science test on the whole unit on Monday, December 10th. A study guide will be sent home on Monday!
